US job market settles into 'low-hire, low-fire' as claims near a 57-year low

Reuters · 2026-10-11

Initial claims for US unemployment benefits fell 2,000 to 197,000 in the week to 3 October, remaining near a 57-year low for a fourth consecutive week, while continuing claims rose 17,000 to 1.716 million, Reuters reported, citing Labor Department data. Economists described a "low-hire, low-fire" market in which employers neither sack nor add staff. The median duration of unemployment reached 11.5 weeks in September, near a four-and-a-half-year high, and the unemployment rate stood at 4.2%.

The low-layoff headline hides what actually matters for hiring: employers are hoarding workers but refusing to add headcount, so the pool of long-term unemployed is quietly widening. For TA leaders the signal is not the claims number — it is the duration figure. Candidate supply is looser than a "57-year low" suggests, but the people arriving have been out of work longer, and that gap historically works against them in screening.

Who to talk with in your enterprise

Align with your finance business partner on whether the business is genuinely in hiring mode, since the macro signal is now bifurcated. Check with your recruiting leads whether they are seeing longer-duration unemployed candidates and whether that is shifting the shape of your applicant pool.

What to take a closer look at

Look at your own applicant data against this backdrop: is the average employment-gap length in your pipeline rising, and does your process filter those candidates out early? Audit any "currently employed preferred" logic, minimum-recency requirements, or automated screening rules that may quietly screen out longer-tenure gaps.

What to think about more deeply

If the market is "low-fire" but also "low-hire", is a 57-year low in layoffs actually good news for anyone except the people who already have a job?
