UK employers lag the world on AI in hiring — candidates stay wary

Onrec · 2026-10-02

Morgan McKinley's 2026 Global AI Report, covered by Onrec on 29 September, finds 55% of UK employers have not adopted AI in hiring, against 36% globally. Across 2,106 respondents in seven markets, 28% of UK candidates said they would be less likely to apply to a role where AI evaluated their application, versus 23% globally, and 40% of UK employers said verifying candidates' skills and experience had become harder as AI-assisted applications rise. Only 5% of candidates worldwide trust AI to make a hiring decision on its own, rising to 44% when a human remains in the loop.

The UK is the wrong kind of outlier for anyone selling AI into hiring: employers are slow to adopt it and candidates are slow to trust it, so a tool switched on without care will shrink your pipeline rather than widen it. The sharper warning is the 40% of UK employers who now find skill verification harder — AI is inflating the top of the funnel while making the part you actually care about, telling who can genuinely do the job, more difficult.

All action is situated in your corporate context. These are starting points, not prescriptions — choose what fits.

Who to talk with in your enterprise

Talk to your head of talent analytics about whether your own funnel shows the same pattern — rising AI-polished applications and a falling signal at screening. Then brief your employer brand lead: when more than a quarter of UK candidates say AI evaluation puts them off applying, the line between your AI tooling and your EVP is the same conversation.

What to take a closer look at

Check what your careers site and job adverts actually disclose about AI screening. If candidates only discover automated assessment after they have applied, you are compounding the trust deficit this data documents and widening the gap between your advertised and real candidate experience.

Reflect

What to think about more deeply

The people building AI into hiring are the same people who do not want it deciding their own next job. What exactly are you asking candidates to trust?
