Talent Platforms' Gross Spend Fell 2% — AI Is Both the Cause and the Fix
The News
SIA's sixth annual Global Talent Platform Survey found gross spend on talent platforms fell 2% globally to $15.3bn last year, against a 2% increase for the staffing industry — only the second such underperformance in six years, with the market forecast to stay roughly flat through 2027. SIA attributes the headwinds to persistent macro hiring pressure since 2023, weakness in verticals such as healthcare, and two AI effects: Google's AI-generated search answers reducing organic referrals to platforms, and automation weighing on demand for smaller, less complex freelance tasks. At the same time, research analyst Kevin Chen flagged that nearly half of surveyed platforms are already offering, piloting or planning some form of 'AI labour', and 61% expect growth to accelerate in 2026. The Americas' share of gross spend fell to 47% from 58% in 2019, while EMEA and APAC each gained ground. Why It Matters
If you buy contingent or freelance capacity through platforms, the market underneath you is quietly rebalancing. AI is hollowing out exactly the low-complexity task work that was cheapest and fastest to outsource, while simultaneously creating a new, pricier tier of AI-skilled freelance supply that the platforms themselves are now packaging and selling back to you. That cuts both ways for a TA leader: your contingent workforce mix may need to shift toward specialised and AI-related work, and the candidate flow you once got cheaply from platform search may already be eroding as AI answers intercept the queries.Taking Action

Who to talk with in your enterprise
Your contingent workforce or procurement lead: walk through what you actually buy from platforms and classify it by complexity — the commoditised task work is the most exposed to AI substitution, and the specialised/AI work is where rates may now be rising. Your talent analytics lead: is platform-sourced candidate volume holding steady, or has it dipped in line with the AI-search-referral decline SIA describes?Inspect
What to take a closer look at
Run a spend-and-classification review of your last twelve months of platform invoices: how much was simple, repeatable task work versus specialised or AI-related projects? Check platform-sourced candidate flow by quarter against your other channels — if it's falling while direct and referral channels hold, AI-generated search answers are a plausible cause worth quantifying. And re-check the rate cards on the skills you buy most, because the report's own logic says AI-related rates are moving while commoditised rates soften.Reflect
What to think about more deeply
If the platforms you hire through are pivoting to sell 'AI labour' back to you, what does that tell you about which of your requisitions were never really human-shaped in the first place?
