Indeed's Opaque Search Results Are Pushing Employers Toward New Competitors
The News
Writing in ERE, David Manaster reports that employers are losing confidence in Indeed's search experience. Hamra Enterprises, a 7,500-employee restaurant franchise operator, paid for Sponsored Jobs to promote 50 Panera openings in Spring, Texas — but searching 'Panera, Spring Texas' returned jobs at Panda Express and McDonald's while Hamra's listings appeared inconsistently. Indeed confirmed that its search is now personalised and that 'Premium Sponsored Jobs appear in the top three search results 2x more often than Standard Sponsored Jobs,' while noting premium sponsorship doesn't guarantee visibility. Two startups are attempting to exploit the opening: Role, founded by Deven Patel, crawls employer career sites directly and removes duplicate listings, functioning as a search engine rather than a paid job board. Dreamwork, founded by Colin Johnson, asks candidates to upload a resume and ranks jobs by estimated fit, bypassing traditional search entirely. Neither has Indeed's scale.
Why It Matters
For TA leaders spending six or seven figures annually on Indeed, the core value proposition — pay for visibility, get visibility — is eroding. If your own recruiters can't reproduce what candidates see, you can't assess whether your spend is working. The personalisation layer means your cost-per-application data is increasingly unreliable as a comparison metric. This isn't a reason to abandon Indeed, but it is a reason to stop treating it as a predictable channel and start treating it as an opaque algorithm you're paying to influence.
Taking Action
All action is situated in your corporate context. These are starting points, not prescriptions — choose what fits.

Who to talk with in your enterprise
Your recruitment marketing lead: Ask them to search Indeed for your own currently sponsored roles using the exact terms a candidate would use. If the results don't include your jobs, your spend isn't delivering what you think it is. Your procurement or HR tech lead: Review whether your Indeed contract has any visibility or performance guarantees — and whether 'premium' sponsorship is actually producing measurable differences in application volume.

What to take a closer look at
For your top 5 roles currently being recruited, have someone outside your TA team search Indeed for the job title plus your company name and location. Document what appears. Compare against your Indeed dashboard's reported impressions and apply rates. The gap between what the dashboard says and what a real search returns is your visibility blind spot.
Reflect
What to think about more deeply
If the dominant job board built its empire on simple, transparent search, how long can it sustain dominance by making that search less transparent — and how many of your recruiting budget assumptions are built on the old model?
