Data Center Hiring Has Doubled in Two Years — and Most of It Isn't Software Roles

Indeed Hiring Lab · 2026-07-20

Indeed Hiring Lab analysis by Aubrey Woessner and Laura Ullrich found that US data center job postings have more than doubled over the past two years, now representing 6 in every 1,000 postings — up from 2 per 1,000 in May 2023. The 10 largest tech firms account for 71% of data center postings in 2026, and their hiring footprint in smaller metros like Columbus, OH; Jackson, MS; and Reno, NV has jumped from under 2% of local postings in mid-2025 to over 10% today. Roughly a quarter of openings are for installation and maintenance workers, who earn a 42% premium — about $10 more per hour — compared to non-data-center equivalents. Private spending on data center construction rose 23% over the past year, nearing $60 billion in May alone, according to US Census Bureau data cited in the report.

The AI build-out is creating jobs, but not the ones most TA teams are tracking. If your talent strategy assumes tech hiring means software engineers in tier-one cities, you're missing where the demand has actually moved. The geographic shift is significant: big tech's posting share in Columbus, Jackson, and Reno went from under 2% to over 10% in twelve months. For organisations competing for installation, electrical, and engineering talent in those metros, this is a direct wage-pressure threat — a 42% premium for the same skills will pull workers out of adjacent industries. TA leaders in manufacturing, construction, and utilities in these regions should expect to lose people.

All action is situated in your corporate context. These are starting points, not prescriptions — choose what fits.

Who to talk with in your enterprise

Your workforce planning lead — ask whether your headcount plans account for hyperscaler entry into your labour markets. If you operate in Columbus, Reno, Jackson, or Northern Virginia, your attrition models may be understating risk. Your compensation partner — benchmark your installation and maintenance roles against data center rates, not just your industry peers. The 42% premium is a retention problem hiding in plain sight.

What to take a closer look at

Map your physical locations against the metros identified in the Indeed report. For any site within commuting distance of a hyperscaler data center hub, pull your 12-month attrition data for electrical, installation, facilities, and maintenance roles. If turnover is trending up in those roles but not others, you've found your competition — and it isn't who you think.

Reflect

What to think about more deeply

Your CEO keeps asking what AI means for headcount. The honest answer might be that it's already reshaped your labour market — you just haven't looked outside your own job families.
