Indeed Launches Smart Screening — Structured Candidate Evaluation Replaces Resume Keyword Filtering
The News
Indeed has launched Smart Screening and Smart Fit Score, moving the job platform beyond resume matching into structured candidate evaluation embedded directly in the application experience. Announced by Aptitude Research on June 5, the feature engages candidates through a conversational interface at the moment of application — asking follow-up questions, clarifying responses, and capturing deeper context that would previously have required a recruiter phone screen.
The Smart Fit Score provides a consistent evaluation against employer-defined hiring criteria using candidate-provided data, not just resume keywords. Two additional features address growing pain points: bot mitigation to verify candidates are real in an era of AI-generated applications, and credential verification for licenses and certifications. Madeline Laurano, founder of Aptitude Research, described it as 'not just another screening tool' but something that 'fundamentally changes where and how screening happens in the hiring process.'
Notably, Indeed is not using Smart Fit Score to compare candidates against each other or make autonomous hiring decisions. It remains built on employer-defined criteria with human oversight — a deliberate design choice as trust remains one of the biggest barriers to AI adoption in TA.
Why It Matters
This matters because Indeed historically drove application volume — and volume has become part of the problem. Aptitude Research data shows 68% of companies have more applicants than last year while 58% have fewer recruiters. The gap is widening between application volume and recruiter capacity to evaluate it meaningfully. Smart Screening addresses that bottleneck by moving evaluation earlier and standardizing what 'qualified' means.
For TA leaders running lean teams, this is a practical tool that could reduce the time recruiters spend on phone screens with obviously unqualified candidates. But there's a catch: the tool evaluates against criteria the employer defines, which means your hiring manager intake conversation — what do we actually need? — becomes more important, not less. If the criteria are wrong, Smart Screening just generates confident-but-wrong assessments faster. The feature also raises the question of whether your ATS can ingest structured assessment data from Indeed, or whether this creates another integration point to manage.
