SHRM: TA Teams Are Shrinking — 'Wrenching Change' Ahead as AI Reshapes Recruiting

SHRM · 2026-06-05

SHRM's latest analysis of talent acquisition trends for 2026 carries a blunt title: "Precision Over Scale." The thesis is that TA teams are shrinking alongside hiring demand, and the function's value proposition is shifting from volume to accuracy.

David Manaster, founder and CEO of ERE Media, described 2026 as a year of "wrenching change" for TA organisations. Teams are being consolidated. Repetitive work is being offloaded to AI. The days of measuring recruiting success by number of reqs filled are giving way to metrics focused on quality of hire, speed-to-competency, and cost-per-quality-hire.

Part of what's driving this, SHRM notes, is that "confirming identity, credentials, and continuity from application to offer will be table stakes" across recruiting platforms by next year. The era of experimenting with AI tools in isolation is ending — accountability is replacing it.

For TA leaders, this is the macro narrative that explains everything else happening in 2026. If your team is being asked to do more with less — and you're getting pressure to adopt AI — you're not alone. This is the industry norm now.

The "wrenching change" Manaster describes is the transition from TA as a process-management function to TA as a strategic advisory function. The teams that navigate this successfully will be the ones that proactively redefine their metrics before someone else does it for them. If your CHRO still measures your team on time-to-fill alone, you have a strategic narrative problem — not a performance problem.
