AI Adoption in HR Hits 43% — But 66% of Candidates Would Avoid AI-Driven Employers

SHRM State of AI in HR 2026 · 2026-06-04

SHRM's 2026 State of AI in HR report puts AI adoption at 43% across HR functions, up from 26% in 2024 — a significant climb that signals the shift from pilots to operational reality. Recruiting leads the way at 27% of AI use cases, followed by HR technology management (21%), learning and development (17%), and employee experience (14%).

But there's a parallel trend that should worry TA leaders: Pew Research found that 66% of Americans would not apply for a job at an employer known to use AI in hiring decisions. The gap between what employers are building and what candidates will accept is widening, not narrowing.

This is the defining tension in TA tech right now. The business case for AI in recruiting is strong — efficiency gains, faster screening, broader candidate reach. But the candidate experience side is struggling. If two-thirds of potential applicants are actively deterred by AI hiring tools, every efficiency gain comes with a talent pipeline cost.

The organisations that figure out how to use AI without alienating candidates will have a genuine competitive advantage. The ones that deploy AI as a black box will find their quality-of-hire metrics improving in a vacuum — because the candidates they most want are going elsewhere.
