One-Third of Companies Expect AI to Run Hiring by End of 2026 — Training Investment Not Keeping Pace

HR Dive · 2026-06-04

A growing chorus of CEOs expect AI to handle the majority of hiring processes within the year, according to recent surveys cited by HR Dive. One-third of companies now anticipate AI will run their entire hiring process by the end of 2026.

But the same research flags a concerning gap: companies are on an "unsustainable hiring spree" for AI talent without corresponding investment in recruiter training and upskilling. General Assembly's CEO warned that organisations are rushing to close the AI skills gap externally while neglecting to build AI literacy internally.

An Employ report adds that recruiters are making a "decisive shift" toward responsible AI use in TA, but the shift is being driven by individual recruiter initiative rather than organisational strategy.

There's a pattern here worth naming: executive expectations for AI in hiring are accelerating faster than the organisational capability to deliver it well. CEOs hear "AI can automate hiring" and set targets. TA leaders get the mandate but not the budget for training, change management, or integration.

The result is that recruitment teams are being asked to run faster with tools they haven't been trained to use effectively. And when the AI tools underperform — because they're deployed without proper oversight, training data, or integration — the TA function takes the credibility hit, not the tool vendor.
